You Want to Take This Inside? Keeping Your Pet Active When the Weather Won’t Cooperate

Young or old, human or canine, exercise is essential to a happy life and a healthy heart—and we’re lucky to live in a part of the world where outdoor activities are possible year-round. That being said, there are still plenty of days when the outside world is less than optimal. Whether it’s too hot, cold, rainy, or smoky (or you’d just rather stay home), here are a few easy and fun ways to keep your pup (and you) moving and promote a healthy heart!

  • Hide and Seek
Some things are classics for a reason! Hide and seek is not only fun and good physical exercise; it’s good mental stimulation for your pup, too. Get them to stay, and then find a hiding spot. Call them when you’re ready to begin, and make sure you have treats and love waiting when they find you! For extra fun, stash a few bonus treats around the house for them to discover.
  • Obstacle Courses
There’s a good chance that you once drove your parents crazy with this on rainy days—or maybe your own kids are now the culprits! But no matter who’s playing, a mini agility course can be tons of fun and good mental and physical exercise. Arrange chairs or furniture to weave through, make blanket tunnels to crawl in, and create pillow piles to jump over. Guide your pup through with lots of treats and encouragement! Just make sure to keep it safe and to keep your pup’s abilities and limitations in mind.
  • (Not so) Tiny Bubbles
This is a good one for dogs who like to chase and fetch! It’s essential to use pet-approved bubbles; some come in enticing flavors like bacon or peanut butter. Blow a few bubbles and encourage your pup to catch and pop them. Popped bubbles can be slippery on bare floors, so be sure you play this one in an area free from slipping hazards.
  • Find the Treasure
This one’s much like hide and seek, but this time, your pup is looking for treats that have been cleverly stashed around the house! Begin with some easier spots to let them get the hang of it, then move on to more challenging locations. Pirate-style treasure maps and costumes are optional, but we think they add to the fun.
  • Tug-of-War
Another timeless classic! A round of tug-of-war is a fantastic way for your pup to burn off some energy and sass. Make sure you use an appropriate toy that won’t cause any damage to your dog’s teeth, and monitor for any bits that may break off the tug toy.

Let the Games Begin!

Of course, this is just a small list. You can use your imagination to devise other ways to keep your pup active when they’re stuck indoors. Just make sure that the area you’re playing in is safe for them (and you) and that you pay attention to their limitations and comfort level.
